Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation treatment that can smooth away fine lines and wrinkles, diminish the appearance of acne scars, and improve hyperpigmentation—for a youthful, even-toned, and glowing complexion. At San Francisco Plastic Surgery, Emily Sespaniak, NP offers a range of non-surgical procedures, including microneedling with the revolutionary SkinPen®, the first FDA-cleared microneedling device.
The SkinPen is a handheld device that contains a number of tiny, sterile needles that move up and down at high speed, creating “micro punctures” or channels in the skin. These tiny punctures stimulate the body’s natural healing process and promote the production of collagen and elastin, two proteins that are essential for healthy, youthful-looking skin. Collagen and elastin help to plump up the skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and improve the overall texture and tone of the skin.
Microneedling offers many potential benefits, including:1
There is minimal prep needed before microneedling with the SkinPen, but you do need to ensure that your skin is in a calm state. This means you should avoid exfoliating the area, including chemical exfoliants, scrubs, retinoids and hair removal. Emily Sespaniak, NP can advise you on which products to avoid in the days before your appointment.
During the microneedling procedure, the SkinPen is passed over the skin in a series of overlapping passes. A numbing cream is usually applied beforehand to minimize any discomfort. The depth of the needles can be adjusted to accommodate different skin types and areas of the face or body.
After the procedure, the skin may appear red or slightly swollen, but this typically subsides within a day or two. Following aftercare instructions is important for best results. Emily Sespaniak, NP will review aftercare with you, which includes:
Is microneedling right for me?
Microneedling is safe and effective for all skin types. If you are looking for a non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatment that is clinically proven to work, it could be right for you. You should not have microneedling if you have a bleeding disorder, if you are pregnant or nursing, if you have a skin infection, or if you are taking Accutane.
Where can microneedling be performed?
Microneedling with the SkinPen is most commonly performed on the face, neck, and chest.
How many microneedling treatments will I need?
Your treatment plan will depend on your individual concerns and goals, but in general best results are seen with a series of 3 to 6 treatments spaced one month apart.
Will microneedling hurt?
A topical numbing product will be applied beforehand to ensure your comfort during treatment.
