Botox® Cosmetic is best known as an effective wrinkle reducer, but did you know that Botox can also be used to improve your smile and give the appearance of a fuller upper lip? When placed strategically by an experienced practitioner, Botox® can relax the upper lip and create a slight eversion or “flip” of the lip to create a fuller appearance when smiling. The result is a more contoured upper lip that appears fuller and more youthful.

Lip Augmentation With a Botox® Lip Flip Vs. Lip Fillers

Injectable dermal fillers are the gold standard in non-surgical lip augmentation, so how do you decide between a Botox® lip flip or lip fillers? The answer depends on your goals.
The primary differences between these two treatments are:

  • Botox® creates the appearance of a fuller lip by relaxing the muscles around the top lip to show more of your natural lip tissue when smiling, while dermal fillers add volume with hyaluronic acid based gel formulas.
  • Botox® lip flip focuses on just the top lip, while lip fillers can enhance both the top and bottom lip.
  • Lip augmentation with fillers gives immediate results that last 6 months to a year on average, while results with Botox® lip flip take a few days to be apparent and usually last up to 3 months.
  • Botox® lip flip typically costs less than lip fillers since less product is needed to achieve results.

Your Lip Flip—What to Expect

Preparing for a Botox® Lip Flip

Minimal prep is needed for this quick and minimally invasive in-office procedure. You can minimize your chance of swelling or bruising by refraining from alcohol and blood-thinning medications such as ibuprofen or aspirin for a few days before treatment.

The Procedure

Emily will strategically place small injections of Botox® into the outer edge of your upper lip. A topical anesthetic is used to minimize discomfort. The treatment usually takes less than 10 minutes.

After Lip Flip

You may experience some mild swelling at the injection site, which typically resolves within a few hours. We just ask that you avoid exercise until the following morning after your treatment. As the muscles around your upper lip gradually relax, your final results will become visible several days after treatment. Most patients will see the final result at 2 weeks. You can expect to enjoy a younger-looking smile with a fuller upper lip for 2-3 months.
