Before and after left delayed implant reconstruction in a 47-year-old breast cancer survivor who had failed a previous implant reconstruction. Her left radiated breast skin was thin and repeatedly got infected, requiring explantation. Following removal of her implant, she was advised to let the firm post-infection swelling (called edema) resolve for a full year.

For her delayed reconstruction, a full-sized smooth round silicone gel breast implant was placed on top of the muscle, in the prepectoral position. All constructing scar bands were released, and a sample of scar tissue was sent for bacterial analysis – and was clear.

Follow up photos are shown 4 months after surgery. Going forward, she will do everything possible to avoid injury to her left breast or infection.
