Before and after left delayed breast reconstruction with a DIEP flap in a 46-year-old breast cancer survivor who had previously had a breast reduction. She was not offered reconstruction at the time of her mastectomy, which is tragic but unfortunately happens more often than is acceptable.
A DIEP flap reconstructed her left breast using skin and fat from her lower abdomen. Microsurgical breast reconstruction is the best way to match a natural breast size, shape and texture – by using a woman’s own skin and fat which replaces much of the lost breast volume.
At 6 months postoperatively, her left nipple was reconstructed using the nipple sharing technique. Medical tattoo was used to reconstruct her left areola. Follow up photos are shown 9 months after her DIEP flap and 3 months after nipple reconstruction and areola tattoo.
