Before and after bilateral nipple sparing mastectomies and immediate DIEP flap breast reconstructions in a 54-year-old breast cancer survivor. After her left lumpectomy and other breast cancer scares, she elected to have prophylactic mastectomies to reduce her future cancer risk.
Fat from her lower belly was microsurgically transplanted to her chest on tiny (2-3 mm) blood vessels as DIEP flaps. In general, one artery and two veins are transplanted with each flap to ensure adequate arterial inflow and venous outflow per side. She spent several days in the hospital to heal and took 6 weeks off work and exercise after surgery.
Long term follow up photos are shown 5 years postoperatively. She loves her “Mommy Makeover” result and no longer feels “like a ticking time bomb waiting for another cancer”!
