Before and after left delayed DIEP flap breast reconstruction in a 45 year old breast cancer survivor. She had completed chemotherapy and radiation after a non-skin sparing mastectomy.
She was unfortunately never offered breast reconstruction – which is a legal right in California and the entire United States! She learned about the DIEP flap through online research and was thrilled to learn that we have been offering this advanced breast reconstruction technique to women since 2006!
A DIEP flap reconstructed her left breast. Six months later, she underwent nipple and areola reconstruction using the nipple sharing technique (a free nipple graft was harvest from her right nipple and transplanted to the left). Areola reconstruction was performed by medical tattoo.
Long term follow up photos are shown 5 years after surgery. You can see firsthand why breast reconstruction is so rewarding to our team! There is no substitute for using the body’s own tissue for reconstruction. Currently, the DIEP flap is our microsurgical gold standard in Plastic Surgery.
