Before and after bilateral nipple and areola reconstruction in a 53 year old breast cancer survivor. She previously had undergone bilateral skin sparing mastectomies and partially submuscular implants, resulting in a significant animation deformity with pectoralis muscle contraction.
She also had undergone nipple and areola reconstruction with a flat nipple and faded areola tattoo. Her goal was to have more normal looking nipples and areolas but not to have much more nipple projection.
Together with conversion of her implants from under the muscle to on top (prepectoral reconstruction), her nipples and areolas were reconstructed simply by redoing the medical tattoo. The nipple circles were pigmented slightly darker than the surrounding areola to provide definition.
The older areola circle was ignored and a new, brighter, smaller areola circle was created by medical tattoo. Note the brighter areola takes attention away from the previous faded circle. Follow up photos are shown 3 months after surgery.
