Before and after correction of a tubular breast shape with breast implants and a lift. Tubular breasts form due to a constricted breast footprint during development – the breasts are limited in their growth in the lower pole, causing “pseudo-ptosis” – where the majority of the breast tissue develops right behind the nipple and areola. The high breast fold limits development of the bottom of the breast, and the breast assumes a conical or pointy shape, like a “tuber” (potato).
Correction of tubular breasts often involves placement of a breast implant in the subglandular position. Smooth round silicone gel breast implants were placed through an incision hidden in the fold of the breast. The breast implant recruits skin from the chest wall to round out the bottom the breast and create a more pleasing cleavage. An incision around the areola helps to push back protruding tissue in the center of the breast.
Follow up photos are shown 6 weeks after surgery. The periareolar incisions are bright pink as expected. Her areolas will gradually wake up and regain their contractile ability – for now, they are asleep and are somewhat stretched out and inactive. She is ready to start scar therapy, which involves scar massage and use of a topical scar gel for at least 6 months, or until the scars naturally fade.
