Before and after bilateral breast reconstruction revision with liposuction of the axillary rolls in an extremely healthy and active 80-year-old breast cancer survivor. Her completely submuscular saline-filled implants created chronic pressure, tightness and muscle aching in her chest. She wanted her breasts to have better cleavage and be a little fuller, to better match her curvy figure, and to get rid of her animation deformity, seen when she flexes her pec muscles.
Her breast revision involved removal of the saline breast implants, capsulectomy to remove scar tissue, replacement of her pectoralis major muscles to the chest wall, and reconstruction of her chest wall musculature. New smooth round silicone gel breast implants were placed on top of the muscle, in the prepectoral position. Liposuction removed excess fat from her armpits and bra rolls.
After surgery, she took a full month off exercise and walking her dog. Long-term follow up photos are shown 4 years after surgery. She loves that her breasts now feel more natural, do not spasm every time she uses her arms, and that she has less fat hanging over the sides of her bra!
Age is one factor we look at when considering a major surgery that requires general anesthesia. So long as a patient is healthy enough to undergo a two-to-three hour surgery asleep in the operating room, has medical clearance from their own Doctor, and has help at home after surgery, it is reasonable to consider Plastic Surgery - even in Octogenarians!
