Before and after right delayed implant reconstruction in a 53-year-old breast cancer survivor. Prior to breast cancer, she had submuscular saline breast augmentation. At the time of her right mastectomy, her implant was removed and replaced with a submuscular tissue expander. Due to infection during chemotherapy, the expander required removal. She waited several years before she felt ready for another try at reconstruction.
Her right breast reconstruction involved placing a smooth round silicone gel breast implant on top of the muscle, in the prepectoral location. She had sufficient skin to obviate the need for tissue expansion – instead, the full-sized implant was placed during this surgery.
Her left saline breast implant was removed, the pectoralis major muscle was returned to the chest wall, and a new smooth round silicone gel breast implant was placed subglandularly.
Liposuction removed fat from her armpits and bra rolls. A peri-areolar mastopexy was performed on the right to create improved symmetry of her nipple and areola height. Follow up photos are shown 2 months after surgery.
