Before and after bilateral breast reconstruction using breast implants and a lift in a 46-year-old breast cancer survivor. She had completed her breast cancer treatment which included a left breast lumpectomy and radiation therapy and chemotherapy. It had been a year since the end of radiation treatments, which resulted in a contracted left breast.
She wanted her breasts to be fuller and rounder. We encouraged her to view her breast reconstruction as an opportunity to have her Mommy Makeover! Bilateral breast augmentation and a mastopexy with liposuction of the axillary rolls helped her to achieve these goals.
Smooth round silicone gel breast implants were placed on top of the muscle, in the subglandular position. Both nipples and areolas were lifted. The right breast required a lollipop incision, and the left breast only needed a periareolar incision since it was already contracted due to radiation. Liposuction removed excess fat from her armpits and bra rolls.
Follow up photos are shown four months after surgery. Note that the right breast scars are already faded and flat, due to radiation. Did you know – past radiation makes scars look nicer? Radiation is in fact a treatment for keloid scars. Her right breast scars are normal and pink for this stage of scar maturation after surgery.
