Before and after left breast revision in a 39 year old woman. Her left breast implant had developed capsular contracture after a root canal where she forgot to premedicate with prophylactic antibiotics. We prescribe Amoxicillin (or Clindamycin for patients who have a Penicillin allergy) that should be taken before any visit to the dentist or before procedures of the gastrointestinal tract such as a colonoscopy. It is subtle in the photographs, but her left upper pole is more prominent than on the right and it felt very tight for her at all times.
A left capsulectomy and implant exchange solved her issue! A sample of left breast internal capsule was sent for bacterial analysis. Thankfully, the culture did not show any bacterial growth. If the culture was positive, we would have treated her with an appropriate antibiotic for two weeks. Changing the implant to a new device is the most important factor in preventing recurrence when treating capsular contracture surgically.
Follow up photos are shown three months after surgery. Her left breast implant remains soft, mobile and symmetric with her other breast.
