Nipple reconstruction using a free nipple graft from the other breast. A skin sparing mastectomy removed the nipple and areola of the right breast. Breast reconstruction was performed using an implant on top of the muscle, in the prepectoral position.
After chemotherapy and radiation therapy was complete, a piece of the left nipple was transplanted as a free nipple graft to the right breast. Medical tattoo reconstructed the right areola. Follow up photos are shown 6 weeks after nipple and areola reconstruction.
Using a free nipple graft, also known as "nipple sharing", is the very best way to reconstruct a normal looking nipple. Nipple tissue has a specialized structure, texture and color - as long as there is sufficient nipple tissue on the other side, this is our go-to procedure for nipple reconstruction after breast cancer.
