Before and after bilateral skin-sparing mastectomies and DIEP flap breast reconstructions in a 45-year-old woman with invasive breast cancer. Following neoadjuvant chemotherapy, she elected to have a double mastectomy so as not to worry about her non-cancerous breast. She wanted to use her body’s own tissue for breast reconstruction and was an appropriate candidate for the DIEP flap.
Skin and fat was microvascularly transplanted from her lower abdomen to her chest, replacing her breast tissue and creating two soft, warm, natural looking and feeling breast reconstructions. Nipple reconstruction was performed using the local flap technique, and medical tattoo created two new areolar circles.
Follow up photos are shown 3 years after surgery. Her scars are nearly all mature, and she has moved on with her life, grateful that she was a candidate for this incredible procedure!
