Before and after bilateral DIEP flap breast reconstruction in a 53-year-old woman with bilateral breast cancer. She requested a double mastectomy and wanted to use her own tissue for breast reconstruction. The cancer was involving her nipples, so they could not be saved.
Tissue (skin and fat) from her lower abdomen was transplanted microvascularly to her chest as DIEP flaps. One year later, she underwent nipple reconstruction using the local flap technique, medical tattoo for areola reconstruction and free fat grafting from her abdomen and flanks to her flaps.
Follow up photos are shown 8 years after surgery. Her areola tattoo has faded – she would benefit from a paramedical tattoo touchup from one of our local experts when she is ready. They do a much better job than Plastic Surgeons, since tattoo artists incorporate three-dimension shading, something that Plastic Surgeons are not trained to do!
