Before and after bilateral inverted nipple correction in a 33-year-old woman. She was self-conscious that her nipples never fully came out and their asymmetry, especially in intimate settings. Her goal was for her nipples to be more symmetrical and everted at rest, and when erect.
An inverted nipple correction was performed under local anesthesia, as a straightforward office procedure. After surgery, the patient took a week off work and three full weeks off exercise. She was relieved that she only needed to take pain medicine the first night, and regular Tylenol after that for a few days.
Follow up photos are shown 3 weeks after surgery. You can see white outlines on her breasts from the EPI-foam “donuts” (splints) she has worn around her nipples during the healing period. These donut splints protect the inverted nipple correction and avoid undue pressure on the nipple, which prevents recurrence of inversion.
Note that her areolas are also enlarged and smooth, not contracting normally – this is normal after any breast surgery. The areolas “go to sleep” in addition to sensory nerves in the nipple. Both sensation and contractile ability of the nipples and areolas will slowly recovery over the next weeks to months after surgery.
At this stage of her recovery, she is ready to start exercising again and looks forward to swimming and wearing tank tops without needing to cover her nipples to hide their different projections during her two-week Hawai’i vacation in another month!
