Before and after bilateral breast reduction in a 16-year-old woman. She had heavy, pendulous breasts that were asymmetric, out of proportion to the rest of her body and significantly limiting her extracurricular physical activities.
She was emotionally mature enough to understand the risks and benefits, expected outcomes, alternatives and potential complications to surgery – this is called “informed consent”. Therefore, she was an appropriate candidate for breast reduction surgery. For patients less than 18 years of age, parental consent is required for surgery.
Approximately 2 pounds of tissue was removed from each breast. A proportional amount of tissue was preserved to maintain her body image, proportions and her identity. Follow up photos are shown a year and a half postoperatively. She now feels comfortable in her skin and is looking forward to going off to college comfortable in her skin and to be able to do sports enthusiastically without pain!
