Before and after bilateral breast reduction in a 17-year-old woman. Her breasts were heavy, hanging, out of proportion to her slender teenage body, and causing pain and poor posture.
She had dreamed about getting a breast reduction since her breasts grew at age 11. With parental consent, she proceeded with breast reduction surgery in her last year of high school over the winter break.
A breast reduction removed nearly a pound and a half of breast tissue from each breast. Liposuction was used as an adjunct to remove excess fat from her armpits.
Follow-up photos are shown 2 years after surgery. Her scars are still fading, which is very common for teenagers. Younger patients produce more collagen during healing, resulting in stronger but more prominent looking scars.
The body naturally replaces thick, red, raised, immature collagen with softer, flatter, more faded looking scars with mature collagen over time – this process usually takes a year but can take even longer in teenagers or in patients who are in their early 20’s.
We will next see her back in the office for her three-year follow up, when we expect her incisions will have faded even more! For now, she is thrilled with her results. Note her improved posture – she only wears cute little bralettes and often goes without a bra altogether!
