Before and after breast reconstruction following lumpectomy and radiation via the breast reduction and lift technique in a 63-year-old breast cancer survivor who had a breast reduction twenty years previously. She had breast asymmetry and a firm, immobile right radiated breast following her cancer treatment, which included tumor removal, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
To create improved symmetry, a local tissue rearrangement (mastopexy) was performed on the right, with a balancing breast reduction and lift on the left. Liposuction removed excess fat from her armpits and bra rolls, known as the axillary rolls.
Follow up photos are shown 8 months after surgery. The right breast is still swollen and firm. Postoperative edema in a radiated breast can take a full year or longer to fully resolve. Her scars are fading, and she no longer needs to wear a bra – if she chooses not to.
