Before and after right breast reconstruction after lumpectomy and radiation and left balancing breast reduction in a 73 year old breast cancer survivor. Her breasts were large and pendulous even before breast cancer, but the breast cancer surgery and radiation therapy created asymmetry that caused her bras to pull to the larger left side.
A breast reduction and lift helped to balance the breast sizes and lift them to a more aesthetic height. Liposuction removed excess fat from the axillary rolls – the armpits and bra rolls. Immediately after surgery, our patient felt more balanced and lighter overall.
Early follow up photos are shown 3 months after surgery. The right radiated breast demonstrates more lasting swelling and distortion, which is normal and is called “edema”. Radiation causes swelling to last longer; it will take a full year for the right breast to relax, assume its final shape and look more symmetric with the non-radiated left breast.
