Before and after breast reconstruction by reduction and lift in a 44 year old woman with two past biopsies and lumpectomies for DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ). She fortunately did not need any radiation. She had existing asymmetry of her breasts and wanted to be reconstructed smaller and more lifted than her current size.
The remaining area where the DCIS was previously was included in the specimen removed during the breast reduction. Her remaining breast tissue was rearranged in a more youthful position on her chest, as per a breast reduction and lift.
Follow up photos are shown a year after surgery. If she were to need radiation, we would expect the radiated side to shrink 5 to 20 per cent afterward. The radiated side is therefore kept slightly larger than the other side for this expected shrinkage.
