Before and after breast augmentation in an 18 year old woman with mildly tubular breasts and asymmetric breast sizes. She wished to have fuller and more normal shaped breasts. She felt her breasts were too small for her frame and she always wore padded bras and never changed in public.
Based on FDA recommendations, saline breast implants can be implanted in women 18 years of age and older. Silicone gel breast implants are recommended for women age 22 and older.
Although this is not a strict “rule”, we usually follow the FDA’s recommendations for cosmetic procedures. (For reconstructive procedures, we use our best judgment and use the best reconstructive device for each patient on a case by case basis, even if they are younger than age 22).
In this case, smooth round saline breast implants were placed subglandularly (on top of the muscle) to create a more normal and natural breast size and shape. Follow up images are shown 6 weeks after surgery. She returned to college one week after her breast augmentation and started exercising at three weeks. She took only plain Tylenol for pain.
