Before and after liposuction of the body in a 39-year-old woman. She had developed a raised, hyperpigmented and itchy vertical abdominal scar after emergency surgery many years ago that she felt looked “like a butt in the front” due to fat protruding on either side of the scar.

She desired an improved contour to her midsection, but was hesitant to have another major surgery that would create long scars, such as an abdominoplasty. We agreed that a tummy tuck was a gamble, given her propensity to make unsightly scars. She was not bothered by her mild rectus diastasis, so we left her abdominal muscles alone.

Liposuction was planned as her procedure of choice to remove excess fat from her belly through smaller incisions. During a two-hour procedure under general anesthesia, liposuction removed excess fat from her upper and lower abdomen, anterior flanks (love handles) and pubic region.

An usual area of hyperpigmented scar above her pubic region was surgically excised to remove the darkly colored thick scar. Steroid injection was performed to her midline abdominal scar.

After surgery, she aggressively massaged her old and new scars and applied scar gel twice a day for nine months, until the liposuction incisions faded and flattened. Follow up photos are shown 1 year after surgery.
