Before and after liposuction of the axillary rolls in a 45 year old woman. She was a breast cancer survivor and had previously completed her breast reconstruction. Like many women facing breast cancer, she was disappointed that her past surgeon did not focus on the aesthetics of the armpit area as part her reconstruction.
The armpit region (axillary area) is indeed important to the aesthetics of the upper chest and can make or break a breast reconstruction’s aesthetics and proportion. A minor revision to her reconstruction involved liposuction of stubborn fat in this area that actually became more prominent after her mastectomies, since she no longer had the “axillary tail” of breast tissue to connect with this fat.
Fat was permanently removed from her armpits via two small incisions hidden in her armpit crease. Follow up photos are shown 3 months after surgery. She still has some palpable firm swelling known as edema that can be felt, but she already has started wearing tank tops without giving her armpits a second thought!
