Not all our patients are at their ideal weight - although it's best to reach that goal before any cosmetic Plastic Surgery procedure. This 44 year old woman was obese but had worked hard to change her diet, exercise and live a healthy lifestyle. She had a large abdominal overhang (called a "pannus") that was limiting her from exercising comfortably.
She came to our office with realistic expectations and wasn't looking for perfection, just better ability to exercise. Regardless of whether the surgery is reconstructive or cosmetic, our goals are always to achieve the very best aesthetic results.
Her abdominoplasty involved removal of the pannus (called a "panniculectomy"), taking care to preserve the blood supply around her old open gallbladder surgery scar. Her rectus abdominis muscles were repaired in the midline. Although she had not had any pregnancies, the muscles can become separated in obesity as per pregnancy. Her abdominal wall tissue was gently redraped and liposuction of the surrounding areas complemented the surgical excision.
Follow up photos are shown 4 months after surgery. She is thrilled with her results and has continued on her fitness and health journey. She can expect her final results with mature scars by around one year.
