Before and after abdominoplasty and liposuction in a 50-year-old woman. While she was not the “ideal candidate” for a tummy tuck – she had lost some weight but had not achieved her ideal weight and could only take one month off work. However, it was reasonable to proceed with surgery after we achieved full “informed consent” through multiple preoperative discussions.
Informed consent means that patients understand well and accept the risks and benefits of surgery, all potential complications, the expected outcomes and alternatives to surgery. In this case, she understood all about abdominoplasty and liposuction surgery, and chose to proceed.
Over seven and a half pounds of lower abdominal skin and fat were removed. Her abdominal muscles were repaired, and her abdominal skin was pulled down to create the long, low scar visible in her postoperative images. Liposuction removed two liters of excess fat from her abdomen and anterior flanks.
Follow up photos are shown 5 months after surgery. Her sensation is improving, and she has resumed full exercise, including swimming weekly. She is actively applying scar gel and already is appreciating her flatter tummy!
