Before and after post-weight loss abdominoplasty in a 54-year-old woman who lost 130 pounds! She had dramatically changed her lifestyle “in order to save her life.” Incredibly, her high blood pressure and diabetes normalized after this dramatic weight loss. She was left, however, with excess lower abdominal skin and redundant fat that made it difficult to exercise and find normal sized clothes to wear to work.
An abdominoplasty removed seven pounds of excess lower abdominal skin and fat, her abdominal muscles were repaired back together in the midline (they were separated from past pregnancies), and liposuction removed nearly nine liters of fat from her upper and lower abdomen, circumferential flanks, pubic region and upper inner thighs. Since it was such an extensive procedure and over five liters of liposuction fat were removed, she required an overnight stay in the hospital.
After surgery, she took a full two months off work and gradually started exercising, finding she could wear normal-sized yoga pants and experiencing working out as an enjoyable experience now! Follow up photos are shown 8 months after surgery. She feels that her “life has just begun” now that she can wear whatever outfits she likes – even a two-piece swimsuit.
Post-weight loss body contouring can help patients find an improved quality of life after years of obesity and needing to modify what they wear, the types of seats they must choose in a restaurant or airplane, and how they feel about themselves. Body image and self-esteem are intimately related to Plastic Surgery, and it is an honor and a privilege to help patients in their journey to take back control of their lives after massive weight loss.
