San Francisco Plastic Surgeon Reveals Her New Nonsurgical Fat Reduction Technique
Dr. Karen Horton offers CoolSculpting® as a liposuction alternative for her patients seeking to eliminate stubborn, isolated areas of fat without surgery.
San Francisco, CA – Karen M. Horton, MD, a San Francisco Plastic Surgeon, always strives to educate her patients and help them make informed decisions about their bodies. By discussing innovative procedures such as CoolSculpting® during the consultation process, Dr. Horton gives her patients a wider selection of choices – both surgical and non-surgical – for achieving their cosmetic goals. Dr. Horton says a new procedure called CoolSculpting®, a non-invasive fat reduction technique, is one alternative to liposuction she recommends for patients struggling with stubborn pockets of fat who want fast results without the downtime associated with surgical treatment.
CoolSculpting® is FDA-approved and can be used to reduce fat in areas of the body including:
- Abdomen
- Flanks (“love handles”)
- Lower and upper back
The CoolSculpting® procedure utilizes “cryolipolysis” (a method of exposing cells to a controlled narrow range of cold temperatures) to destroy targeted fat cells while safely preserving the skin, nerves, and underlying tissues. Additionally, Dr. Horton notes that there is typically minimal discomfort associated with the treatment and no downtime afterward. The procedure takes one hour per area treated, and is performed in her Pacific Heights office on a comfortable day bed while patients watch a movie on their mobile device or iPad. In a recent blog post titled “Benefits of CoolSculpting®,” Dr. Horton says the procedure is so comfortable and relaxing that many patients actually fall asleep during their treatment.
According to Dr. Horton, the ideal candidates for CoolSculpting® are patients who “have localized areas of fat around [their] midsection” but are also “hesitant about undergoing a surgical procedure to remove these fat buildups.” These patients should be at or near their ideal body weight, with isolated pockets of fat that have proven resistant to standard methods of weight loss such as diet and exercise. Dr. Horton says the procedure is not meant to be a quick fix for losing weight, but rather a tool to effectively eliminate areas of fat that remain after traditional means of weight loss have been exhausted.
Dr. Horton says CoolSculpting® patients at her San Francisco Plastic Surgery practice can often experience results similar to those achieved with liposuction in certain areas of the body. However, she notes that CoolSculpting® has the added advantages of no scarring, no required anesthesia, and a much faster recovery. Dr. Horton says patients will typically see the full extent of their results in the first two months following the CoolSculpting® procedure.
