Dr. Horton Featured In The New York Times On The Rise of Plastic Surgery For Men
Dr. Karen Horton was recently featured in a New York Times article on the rise in male Plastic Surgery procedures during the pandemic.
Plastic Surgery has historically been dominated by female patients, but cosmetic treatments are no longer just for women. In fact, in the last 20 years male procedures have increased by over 28%.1
How Plastic Surgery for Men Has Gained Popularity
For better or worse, we’ve all become more familiar with the details—and in many cases, our concerns—with our faces over the past year thanks to the proliferation and necessity of video conferencing. This has sent patients in droves to Plastic Surgeons in what’s been dubbed “the Zoom effect”.
Much like women, the men who have been staring at their own faces all day on their computer screens have been plagued by perceived imperfections such as frown lines, crow’s feet, temporal hollows, and dark circles under the eyes. Many have turned to Plastic Surgeons for a variety of cosmetic interventions. From BOTOX® Cosmetic to smooth the forehead, dermal fillers to fill out the cheeks or sculpt the jawline, laser treatments to rejuvenate the skin, to surgery like liposuction or face and neck lifts, men are seeing these procedures as investments in both their appearance and future.
Baby Boomers to Millennials are seeking aesthetic enhancement, and everything is on the table. Some think that social media may be partly responsible for lifting the taboo for men. Many men have seen someone they know or admire posting about treatment, or even a particular procedure profiled on a surgeon’s Instagram feed.
Men are realizing that they have options to correct aesthetic concerns such as male breast reduction, or CoolSculpting for stubborn pockets of fat. They are hearing other men share their journeys and this has heralded a transition to viewing treatment as part of regular wellness routines rather than something that is cause for shame or embarrassment. It’s not only normalized the desire for men to look their very best but created more demand.
