Fat Reduction for Men: CoolSculpting® or Liposuction?
Men interested in fat reduction treatment are often ideal candidates for CoolSculpting®. When administered by a CoolSculpting® Provider, this novel fat-freezing treatment can produce permanent fat reduction in specified areas without surgical downtime, recovery, bruising, anesthesia, incisions or the need to take time off work. Additionally, physical activities such as working out, cross-fit training, running or cycling can generally be resumed within 24 hours.
However, some men specifically seek a more dramatic result in multiples areas during a single procedure. If a candidate for fat reduction can schedule themselves off work for approximately five days and can avoid strenuous exercise for two to three weeks, then liposuction may be more appropriate than CoolSculpting®. Liposuction is a surgical procedure that uses a blunt-ended wand and a vacuum to permanently remove excess fat through tiny incisions hidden in natural creases. The fat cells will never return, and should future weight gain occur, the fat tends to be distributed evenly throughout the body rather than coming back in new areas (a common misconception about liposuction).
In contrast to CoolSculpting®, liposuction creates dramatic results for many areas in just one surgery, but it requires general anesthesia and a trip to the operating room. Postoperative bruising and swelling can range from minor to significant, and downtime from regular physical activity is at least two to three weeks after surgical fat removal. Postoperative pain medication is usually required for several days, and compression garments are worn for three to six weeks after liposuction to facilitate skin shrinkage and molding to the new body shape.
A formal evaluation by a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon is required to determine whether CoolSculpting® or liposuction is most appropriate for the patient’s needs. At our office, we are fortunate to have ALL the options available to our patients: non-surgical fat reduction procedures such as CoolSculpting®, and surgical procedures such as liposuction or excisional body contouring. We will recommend the procedure that can best meet a patient’s individual goals while fitting their unique schedule, lifestyle and realistic available downtime.
