This comprehensive report from data entered last year by Board Certified Plastic Surgeons in the U.S. provides valuable data on the most popular surgical procedures, demographic trends, and shifts in patient preferences, helping patients understand the industry and make informed decisions about their care.

Utilizing a dataset of over 150,000 procedures performed by 762 surgeons, the report includes data consistently reported by 386 surgeons throughout the year, accounting for a 4% increase in active Plastic Surgeons in the U.S. from 2022 to 2023.

The 2023 Statistics Report reveals a significant growth in aesthetic Plastic Surgery procedures, with a 2.9% increase from 2022 to 2023 and an overall 10.2% rise since 2019. The top five surgical procedures remain consistent, with Liposuction leading the way, followed by Breast Augmentation, Tummy Tuck, Breast Lift, and Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty). These procedures remain the most popular choices among patients seeking to enhance their appearance and boost their confidence.

Gender Trends

The report highlights distinct gender trends in aesthetic plastic surgery. Women undergo the majority of procedures, predominantly seeking breast-related surgeries and liposuction. Men, while seeking cosmetic surgery less frequently, commonly opt for gynecomastia treatment, liposuction, and rhinoplasty. These trends reflect differing aesthetic goals and concerns between genders, with women focusing on enhancing body contours and men addressing specific areas like the chest and nose.

Body Type, Lifestyle, & Seasonal Trends

The report indicates that thin patients (BMI < 20) are more likely to undergo breast augmentation, while obese patients (BMI > 30) frequently choose liposuction and tummy tuck procedures. Seasonal trends show that most cosmetic surgeries are performed in the winter months, while summer sees a slower period for these procedures. These trends highlight how body type, lifestyle, and seasonal preferences influence the choice and timing of aesthetic surgeries.

Facility & Surgeons’ Trends

The 2023 Statistics Report shows that 64% of cosmetic surgeries are performed at Accredited Surgical Centers such as San Francisco Plastic Surgery, our Quad A-certified office-based operating room, with the remaining procedures roughly equally distributed between hospitals and office-based surgery centers, at 19% and 17%, respectively. In terms of surgeon trends, over 90% of surgeons performed liposuctions, abdominoplasties, and breast augmentations, while less than 5% carried out vaginal rejuvenation, penile enlargements, buttock implants, or hair transplantation. These trends reflect the preferred surgery settings and the concentration of common procedures among Plastic Surgeons.

Based on current data, aesthetic Plastic Surgery is expected to continue its upward trend, with procedures like liposuction and breast augmentation likely remaining at the forefront.
