Dr. Karen Horton encourages discussion about labiaplasty to decrease the stigma surrounding the procedure. In a three-part blog series, she talks about who should consider labiaplasty, as well as costs, benefits, and other aspects.

San Francisco, CA — “Labiaplasty is a very personal procedure that can help many women who are experiencing discomfort from having an enlarged labia. Some women are embarrassed to ask about this procedure, but we are here to tell you that modifying the female anatomy to improve your quality of life is nothing to be ashamed about,” states San Francisco Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Karen Horton in a recent blog post. She says despite the fact that it has become an increasingly popular procedure performed on women of a variety of different ages and ethnic backgrounds, many women are still embarrassed to ask about this treatment option. For these women, Dr. Horton drafted a three-part blog series to address patient concerns regarding the procedure, costs, benefits, and recovery period.

In the first post in the series, titled “Is Labiaplasty for Me?”, Dr. Horton talks about who can benefit from labiaplasty. She says virtually any woman who faces cosmetic or functional difficulties due to excess labial tissue can be a candidate for this procedure. Dr. Horton also briefly highlights what the procedure entails, discussing the fact that labiaplasty can minimize the skin around the inner or outer lips of the labia, as well as the clitoral hood of the vagina.

Part two of the series is titled “What Are the Costs and Benefits of Labiaplasty?” Throughout this entry, Dr. Horton discusses weighing the costs and benefits. She says while the surgery is typically not covered by insurance, the cost of the procedure is usually worth the overall enhancement in quality of life for women who are seeking labiaplasty. Dr. Horton says, after the procedure, her patients can enjoy wearing many types of clothing, exercising, and participating in sexual intercourse without discomfort or feeling embarrassed.

In the final installment, “Is Labiaplasty Painful?”, Dr. Horton notes that while minimal pain, swelling, and bruising can be expected during recovery, any symptoms experienced afterward are usually described as mild and manageable by her patients. Also, she says any discomfort can typically be reduced with over-the-counter oral medications. Dr. Horton says many patients feel almost fully recovered within a few weeks following treatment.

“Labiaplasty can be a satisfying experience for many different types of women,” writes Dr. Horton. She encourages all women who may be experiencing discomfort or feeling self-conscious about an elongated labia to discuss their options with a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon with extensive experience in labiaplasty surgery.
